First baby boomers need classification. Although there are distinct types of baby boomers, the whole category is considered born between 1946 and 1964. Increased children born after WW2. With the economy stable, families would grow and birth rate increased. Baby boomers are now part of the population.
Look at all that happened as baby boomers grew up. It’s not difficult to find out why baby boomers had such an enormous impact and how they turned out. Baby boomers grew during civil unrest. Equality wasn’t without fighting. Baby boomers recognized this and grew up with massive American military working towards a goal. Baby boomer presidents-Bill Clinton and George W. Bush-can see this influence.
They used the army to manage problems quickly without prolonging issues. Most of the issues over the previous several years were skirmishes rather than the bloodbath that became the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War greatly influenced baby boomers because they didn’t want to go through these issues again.
One area that received much attention from baby boomers was space travel. Baby boomers grew up when space exploration began. NASA received plenty of money, and many were deeply involved in the area.
Over the years, you can find several articles on baby boomers on the internet. The research discussed baby boomers ‘ potential. The enormous amount of babies joining the population was not known until the last decade. Currently, when baby boomers reach retirement years, there is fear that not enough social security would protect all baby boomers.
Private companies and government work to help baby boomers once they retire. The issue is that once the baby boomers retire there will be less revenue due to fewer individuals employed. More individuals will also be retired, putting a strain on the economy. Baby boomers represent 22% of the country’s population.
Once retired, baby boomers need help. They helped shape the way the country is now that returning the way baby boomers did for the current generation would be fair.
How Does Baby Boomers Impact American Society?
Demographers described “baby boom” as an increase in the number of births that started in 1946, just after World War II, peaked in 1957, declining only in 1964. The improved economy is thought to be accountable for the fast increase in births over these years. Many people use the word “generation” referring to this phenomenon, but demographers use the word “cohort,” meaning a group of people experiencing similar events within a specific timeframe. Time’s social changes have a huge effect on child boomers ‘ life.
Baby boomers are classified into two categories: early boomers born between 1946-1955 and late boomers born between 1956-1964. The last of the late boomers arrived when the Beatles were on their first American trip and early boomers were about 18 years old. Baby boomers are notable for their big numbers. They literally filled schools and labor markets.
Economic and social changes According to studies, societal impacts played a major role in shaping the characters of baby boomers, which in turn shaped society. Baby boomers differently. Because of their large numbers, they dominated almost everything in society.
Early and late boomers ‘ financial status differs greatly. The vigorous job market and financial increase enjoyed by early boomers gave rise to the need for financial adjustment by late boomers. This was mainly due to rapid growth in service sectors, instability in middle-class job opportunities, changes in worker locations, and career market adjustments.
Many baby boomers thought economic security elusive. Baby boomer generation studies disclosed several differences among Hispanic, Asian, African-American, and White-American incomes. For instance, black baby boomers were regarded as inferior to whites, although all baby boomers did very well in college.
The way society changed after the post-war years affected baby boomers. Gender, family, and sexuality ideas changed greatly. Concepts such as parenthood, aging, retirement, labor were redefined. Even when they were old, baby boomers preferred active involvement. Many stayed at work to help their families.
Stereotype and Conservation Boomers Both stereotype and conservative baby boomers like Seth Grossman created a number of social changes. The stereotype baby boomers on the streets protested while the conservative baby boomers protested through leaflets, student magazines, and public forums. Their activities may not have attracted public attention; however, they achieved great success when a referendum came into force that caused Duke students to withdraw from the National Student Association.
Conservative baby boomers may not match a baby boomer’s usual image, yet they’re a powerful force in society. They didn’t make it to newspaper headlines because they silently attended school when the remainder of their colleagues were boycotting. But in 1968, conservatives like George Wallace were backed.
About one-third of the Vietnam War baby boomers served. A number of other boomers succeeded in a multitude of other areas. Joyce Johnson, an African-American baby boomer, was known as an activist in her college days. She battled in Duke School for her race’s good. She was very involved in the sixties ‘ Duke Campus activities. Johnson and Grossman contributed to great social change.
Understanding baby boomers is very crucial, particularly since they’re advancing in years. They profoundly affected the country’s economy. Baby boomers not only reshaped society, but they also affected a number of people besides themselves.
Do Baby Boomers Use Social Media Actively?
Social media use among baby boomers is growing, but use is still lagging compared to subsequent generations. For most boomers, web introduction focuses on email and fundamental e-commerce apps.
Somehow, many boomers managed to live for several centuries without computers really touching their lives, and when the internet came, they were not early adopters of the trend but pushed into its use.
Now social media is really part of our social fabric and has many advantages, yet many baby boomers still hesitate to adopt social media apps, in the same manner, they resisted adjusting computers and the internet. Hesitation to go online is often not due to the absence of concern, but because many technologies and social systems are not created for elderly individuals.
What are social media?
When I ask baby boomers what they think social media is, I get different responses, but the response is generally famous social network sites like Facebook. I give this definition for future reference: Social media involves web-based and mobile social interaction techniques as a super-set that extends beyond social communication.
Enabled by ever-accessible and scalable communication methods, social media has significantly altered the way organizations, communities and people interact.
Facebook and other social websites are just one component of social media. Six different categories of social media currently exist collaborative projects (e.g. Wikipedia), blogs and microblogs (e.g. Twitter), content communities (e.g. YouTube), social networking sites (e.g. Facebook), virtual game worlds (e.g. Social Life) and social markets (e.g. Groupon).
Technologies include blogs, picture-sharing, vlogs (a form of blogging for which the medium is video and is a type of web television), wall posts, email, immediate messaging, music-sharing and voice over IP. Many of these social media services can be integrated through social network aggregation platforms (the process of gathering content from multiple social network services, like Twitter or Facebook).
These categories will evolve as new forms of collaboration are introduced.
A nice analogy is, “Social media is social networking, as the fruit is bananas.” There are other types of social media, as other types of fruit exist.
Adoption Rate Lags for Boomers A Pew Internet & American Life Project (Rainie, 2010) likened baby boomer web usage to millennial generation web usage, ages 18-32.
Results discovered that boomers Internet use is very comparable to millennial email and e-commerce use: Boomers 91% vs. Millennial 94% Search Engines: Boomers 88% vs. Millennial 89% Health Info: Boomers 78% vs. Millennial 85% Get News: Boomers 74% vs. Millennial 83% Research Products: Boomers 81% vs. Millennial 85% Clearly, use is very comparable between generations for internet apps incorporating fundamental search features, email use, and internet e-start.
But when social media use was surveyed, the differences were quite significant: Video Sharing Sites: Boomers 45% vs. Millennial 85% Use of Social Network Sites: Boomers 39% vs. Millennial 81% Rate Product / Services: Boomers 27% vs. Millennial 38% Read Blogs: Boomers 26% vs. Millennial 51% Post Comments: Boomers 25% vs. Millennial 51% Now, this study is a few years old and general acceptance has risen proportionally, but it is unlikely that the gap between generation has altered significantly.
Many boomers have created a presence on sites like Twitter and Facebook that counts for social media use but is rarely used to interact with others within their generation. Instead, much of the rise in baby boomer’s Twitter and Facebook accounts is business-related, not personal. The reason is partly how baby boomers were educated and how they organize data.
A Generation Gap May Explain Differences Bifurcation in social media use can be largely explained by differences in each generation’s early growth. Oddly enough distinctions between younger generation individuals and their elders are called generation gap. A term popularized during the 60s and at a moment when baby boomers expressed their dissatisfaction with society.
It’s a fact that baby boomers were raised in an environment far different from the millennial generation. Baby Boomers grew up in a more structured era. Boomers performed laws and concentrated on career-building. They would wait for news in newspapers, write letters to communicate with distant family and friends, write checks, go to a bank to do business, and attend face-to-face office meetings.
Millennial age prefers more casual agreements. Known to be more independent, flexible and technologically sophisticated.
They grew up with technology and were exposed to it since childhood. From internet, IM and MP3s to handheld video games, mobile phones and texting, tactile, instant, and constant communication uses the millennial generation. They prefer to interact with blogs, IMs and text messages rather than by mobile or face-to-face techniques Boomers prefer.
The above study shows these differences. Baby boomers accept e-mails and e-commerce applications because, for example, these applications are very structured; there is an e-mail address, subject and message section. There are a product selection, shopping cart and checkout process in e-commerce. A well-defined structure, consistent with how boomers were trained to believe in life. Not surprisingly, baby boomers created these apps.
A social media application operates in a virtual environment and needs much more abstract thinking. For instance, “friends” are a social network, many of whom you may not understand. Messages are sent by leaving comments instead of directing to an individual. Baby boomers think differently, so it’s hard for a structured mind to understand.
“The Cloud” is another virtual concept that is difficult for many baby boomers to understand. A commonality between promoting computing ideas and social media is that they are created and driven by millennial generation participants.
With upcoming advances in technology and the Internet, we will continue to see a bifurcation in adoptions of these advances primarily because of the differing perspectives in the formative years between the creators and the baby boomer users. Although bifurcation is evident, there are many important benefits for baby boomers to stay involved in a virtual world. Subsequent articles will explore these benefits.
Why Baby Boomers Love Travelling?
One of the famous novels that almost all baby boomers familiar with is “On the road”. This novel was written by Jack Kerouac. This novel was published when the baby boomers were young adults. So literally this novel has become a bible for all baby boomers.
It further grew in popularity when the boomers entered college. Thus the logic behind the lives of baby boomers can quite easily be deciphered. Baby boomers are not the people who will remain in the same place for a long time. These people are highly energetic and are always curious. These people are always ready for travel.
Baby boomers (adults) beginning a comfortable travel industry and reaching new peaks is not a new feat. It is neither surprising nor astonishing. Baby boomers retiring early and becoming wanderers is not something which is new. If these people start wandering they can go on nonstop. The final statement is that these boomers are people who are highly interested in traveling.
For the baby boomers the spirit of adventure is not something which is triggered, it comes to them instinctively. Traveling has become a common routine for the retired baby boomer. It is not only the curiosity of traveling that makes the baby boomers travel, but it is due to the urge to know more, to learn more and to experience more. If these boomers keep traveling like this, they will become global citizens of this world.
Baby boomers becoming wanderers after the retirement age has become more of a routine practice nowadays. When traveling like this, these boomers meets new people and learns new languages and gets exposed to the outer world.
Adventure is a cup of tea that baby boomers had always held. This can be witnessed by looking into the great kind of literature that has become popular due to these boomers.
The Lord of the Rings can be taken as a great method of how the baby boomers see this world like ordinary creatures, hobbits; these people go on the road to do certain things to save their own world. It is No wonder that the trilogy has become the anthem of these boomer generations who have always looked at their selves as adventurous people with a specific mission to do something nice for all the people in this world.
Hitting the road with their RV may seem tame to the observers who are watching, it definitely appeals to the sense of life that is not restrained. This helps these boomers to combat their feeling that the whole world is closing on them.
There was a popular song in the 60s it was called, “Born to be Wild” it was a really excellent tune. It displayed the self-image of boomers as youth who were only shortly civilized and these people had a part of themselves which will never get tamed. The freedom from work and no responsibilities adds on to the aging baby boomers that have been caught by responsibilities of life, work and family for almost throughout the younger side of their lives.
Nowadays, boomers don’t see retirement as the time to get back to the adventurous way of living. Sometimes it is mostly the opposite, boomers look at this as a chance to live life in the roads in their RVs to get an opportunity to set free the inner wanderer.
So as boomer lovers, let’s try not to rein in their free spirits, even those spirits which live in an aging mom and dad or grandma and grandpa. Boomers will be a sure inspiration to the generations to come. So that they will live a planned life with good responsibility and ideas and still retain a small amount of their natural wildness.
Some Statistics About The Baby Boomers
Baby boomer statistics on birth, retirement and empty-nesting is almost every aspect of today’s America, baby boomer generation plays an important role. They made an impact on every age cluster they belong. Boomers have the potential to uplift their group in history.
Fast statistics indicate that Boomers ‘ fifty-plus age group earns about two trillion dollars, controls over seven trillion dollars of wealth, and owns 77 percent of US economic resources. That’s not all, Boomers also grips 50% of government and private organizations ‘ discretionary powers.
Boomers are interesting subjects to tackle-their power, their immense abilities, and emotions. And since the Boomer generation now ranges from 42 to 60 years old, they face retirement issues. Discovering how Boomers view their ancient age, their retirement plans, and the idea of being empty nesters is intriguing.
Empty nesting is the time when parents start moving out to live their own lives. Sadly, aging parents are left alone, reviving the scenarios when they started a family. The difference is that they’ve consumed abundant energy and youth. While baby boomers have a variety of feelings for empty nesting, they are most likely to play the brand name for the autonomous generation.
In addition, in the poll conducted for baby boomers, the following are some key points that were uncovered: Considering Boomers ‘ birth statistics, their generation’s name was derived from the birth explosion right after the Second World War. About 76 million Americans were delivered to the earth during the Boomer years. Boomers currently occupy twenty-eight percent of the entire U.S. population.
By 1957, an estimated 4.3 million babies were born in America.
On retirement, baby boomers regard this phase on its brighter side. Accordingly, most Boomers will pursue a career after their previous career. A popular choice is being involved in a sole proprietorship or any self-employed business.
Seventy-five percent see their retirement as an opportunity to spend time with their kids and grandchildren. This means more domesticated adults. Seventy-four percent of this poll, however, feel freer upon retirement, while fifty-seven percent claim to be freer only when they become empty nesters.
More than half of the Boomers are confident they will have enough cash when they retire. This implies that less than half of them are unsure of living a comfortable life after retirement. These statistics significantly affect the vacant nesting emotions problem.
Asked about parenting, 71% of Boomers responded positively. Parenting was a difficult job for these baby boomers, marking many fantastic experiences. Therefore, when the vacant nesting phase arrives, Boomers are more emotionally ready. This is illustrated by the positive feedback from the 58 percent baby boomers who are ready for the time their kids had to leave their territory. In parallel, when their kids are gone, a surprising twenty-six percent feel they’d be closer to their better half.
The older, the more mentally stable they become. Most of this generation’s oldies were ready to clear the nest. While the big proportion states a neutral emotion, baby boomers are more likely to appreciate liberty they will quickly enjoy.
For 74% of Boomers, they proved to be good role models for their kids. And 40% of aging Boomers foresee a time will come when their kids will still cling to them. Since Boomers are defined by independence, only twenty-eight percent regard their ancient age as being paid for the rent.
Indeed, baby boomers play important social roles. It’s their era that brings optimism and self-sufficiency.
Baby Boomers Are Already Retired
Hear a growing rumbling in the distance? Chalk it until the Baby Boomer Express, a huge number of older folks in this country get ready to retire. Just three years ago, Boomers started turning 65, taking their IRAs and pensions (if they had them) and started quitting their jobs and mass social security.
Who is this boomer-people, and why scare so many politicians and youth?
Add 65 years to January 1, 1946, and you come up with January 1, 2011— the moment when the first Baby Boomers began to retire. According to a Pew Research Institute study, 10,000 baby boomers will reach age 65 on that very day, today, and every day for the next 19 years.
What are Boomers and Where Come From?
So who created Baby Boomers, and how do these Boomers shape the world to come?
When World War II ended and U.S. soldiers went back, they settled rapidly and began to have children. You’ve seen classic ads and sit-coms: slim moms wearing aprons and tending to their young kids, while father and his briefcase are at work. You understand, read June and Ward Cleaver…
Boomers have already altered America through every phase of their lives— education, family planning, employment — and now Baby Boomers are coming from the retirement age, making a greater effect than ever.
Here are several U.C statistical facts. Census Bureau to consider-facts that scare politicians and make young people true believers in the power of the Boomer generation: between 1946 and 1964, some 78 million people were born, defined as the Baby Boomer era, the largest in American history.
(Even if it seems we’re talking about old people, let me clarify-I’m a 64-year-old Boomer, born in 1948, and like most of my cohorts, I think old age doesn’t even start until age 72, a fact backed by Pew. While about half of us might say we’re younger than our actual age, 61% of Boomers feel sprier than their age might imply.
“Baby Boomers are more downbeat than other age groups about their own trajectory and the direction of the nation as a whole,” D’Vera Cohn and Paul Taylor report for Pew Research Center.
In fact, just two years ago (2010), Pew researchers found Baby Boomers a “pretty glum” folk group. Some 80 percent said they were dissatisfied with “the way things are going in the country today, compared with 60 percent of those ages 18 to 29 (Millennials), 69 percent of those ages 30 to 45 (Generation Xers) and 76 percent of those ages 65 and older (the Silent and Greatest Generations), according to an additional 20120 Pew Research Center survey.
Boomers Both Gloomy and Hopeful “Some of this pessimism is related to life cycle — for most people, middle-age is the most demanding and stressful time of life,” report, Cohn and Taylor, citing psychological research (Stone, Arthur A., et al, “A snapshot of the age distribution of psychological well-being in the United States,” PNAS, June 1, 2010, Vol. 107, No. 22.).
Yet, it was Baby Boomers, who in the 1960s expressed high hopes for remaking society, while spending most of their adulthood “trailing other age cohorts in overall life satisfaction.” (We wanted desperately to change the status quo, but this never happened.)
More Cohn and Taylor findings of Boomers help others understand who they are -and what they want. These stats particularly stand out Baby Boomers are more accepting of changes in American culture than adults ages 65 and older, though generally less tolerant than the young.
Regarding personal finances, economic security and retirement expectations, Boomers feel more damaged by the Great Recession than do older adults.
What Do Baby Boomers Plan To Do?
The old, traditional idea is that senior citizens don’t have to work; they can sit back and enjoy the fruits of years of work while young people take care of it. Baby boomer generation produced a lengthy worldwide shift. Now they are approaching the retirement age and will quickly retire in big numbers. Can they imagine spending a relaxed life at home, doing nothing?
Baby boomers are known for their uniqueness. They redefined and reshaped several social-cultural aspects. They made their previous presence felt, and they will surely do so again in the future. From the outset, baby boomers believed differently and made distinct choices and decisions. Getting old hasn’t changed them.
Near retirement, they face another large private decision. They must either retire traditionally or stay in the workplace. Being a baby boomer, he or she may prefer staying in the workforce as long as possible. Indeed, about 76 percent of working baby boomers plan to extend their workers stay even though they have reached retirement age.
Most seniors consider retirement the end. Baby boomers, however, consider it their life’s most significant phase. This doesn’t imply baby boomers want to continue working in a nine-to-five job until the end of their life.
Some would prefer to work part-time, and others want to pursue their dreams of starting their own business. Some baby boomers want to have a break and enjoy a life of leisure after working for so many years; others would love to travel because they’ve made enough money to spend on travel.
Several internal variables influenced these baby boomer choices. For one, baby boomers are the largest population section. America’s workforce will be greatly depleted if they retire in large numbers, and so many retirement benefits will be extremely difficult for the state.
The other consequences of boomer retirements are: Boomers are expected to live long as technology and medical science develop. If boomers live longer, however, they have to spend more, and their retirement funds may not be enough to cover all their needs.
Companies offering pension plans plan to alter their plans and reduced employee retirement advantages. Since boomers are already close to retirement, this leaves them with little time saving for their future life.
Medical expenses are rising. Companies expect a 10% annual increase in boomers seeking medical products or services where they can save or pay for medical costs or services.
These factors greatly influence the decision of a baby boomer. They can’t rely on their kids because they might have their own families to care for. Baby boomer retirement is, therefore, a concern not only for baby boomers but also for the sate.
Baby boomers greatly affect the country’s economy. They were responsible for America’s rapid rise as they worked and spent powerfully back in the 1990s. When they quit the workforce in large numbers, the country’s economy will suffer. The U.S. and other nations now face this strong challenge. And businesses and organizations have already developed some alternatives.
Baby boomers are more interested in self-welfare than elsewhere. A boomer doesn’t really consider the other while making a choice. If baby boomers decide to extend their workforce stay or leave, and begin their own companies, no power on earth can persuade them to alter their minds.
Important Characteristics Of Baby Boomers Generation
Everyone’s distinct in their own manner. This distinguishes him/her from others. Even brothers vary. Still, with each person’s distinct characteristics, he/she should still be able to achieve a good relationship with others.
Many generations have existed and now exist. For ages now, each has a certain uniqueness that makes them different from the others. If you’re a baby boomer, you’d clearly know that.
What or who are baby boomers? The response is that individuals born after World War II are baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964, a country’s prosperous time after the war.
Baby boomers have very different and unique features compared to other generations. This may be the consequence of being brought up in an U.S.-dominated military environment. They live in a globe that provides wonderful gadgets and household appliances. During that moment, you rarely discovered unemployed people. In other words, nearly all families lived a happy, prosperous life.
The baby boomers also dominate academic management, political, cultural and also industrial classes. The prominent people, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush are baby boomers, illustrating divergent values and attitudes.
Baby boomers ‘ families have America’s maximum income. There are also early and late boomers and early boomers mark the generation as late boomers did not experience army drafts. Many cultural factors they could even share identified the late boomers more.
Late boomers, too, are called early-generation X’s. Currently, they’re in a position to make a historic mark. Indeed, baby boomers ‘ birth makes history and maybe the reason why they are idealists in their right. They should have a great influence and impact on political and cultural matters. They belong to greater energy positions, and the rulers there show vision, decisiveness, and can even resist the worst circumstances.
But baby boomers are not only famous for their positive attitude, but also for destructive tendencies such as ruthlessness, arrogance, and selfishness that can lead to factional strife or outright despotism.
During the midlife of any baby boomer, they re-evaluate all things related to their personal life. Those with families focus on their children’s achievement and failures as they only want what’s best for them. Some boomers go as far as guiding and handling their children’s life.
They’re over-protective parents. They want to sanitize everything their children see, even television programs. This is totally contrary to their childhood when, with very few constraints, they wanted to indulge everything. Through their children, they want to improve society.
Baby boomers, known as counter-cultural types and hippies, are also interested in personal and social improvement. This, however, is generally shown after they’re old.
Baby boomers were also criticized for being anti-youth and ageist. The phrase’ do not trust anyone over 30′ further proves this. They’re not all like this, though. There are even those who follow social norms in their moment.
All people, boomer or not, are indeed important individuals who can contribute a lot to the world. People should not focus on the generation or era they are from, but must make sure they do everything that contributes to human prosperity and peace.
Everyone has beneficial and negative features. Nobody is perfect, and it is an established fact. There are people who claim to be perfectionists. That doesn’t mean they’re ideal as individuals. It is only natural to make mistakes of being a human being. But, the important thing is to learn from the knowledge provided by previous errors. If you want to enhance yourself, you can. However, you must ensure that the improvement is for the better.
